Sizing & fit

How do I figure out my size?Birkenstock sandals and clogs generally run slightly big. Regular widths fit medium to wider width feet. Narrow width fits narrow to American medium. Most people usually fit in the regular Birkenstock width. Use the chart below to find your Birkenstock size range:
You notice we have given you a range of 2 sizes for Birkenstock footwear. This is because we have been fitting Birkenstock footwear for over 17 years now and we have a good understanding for how the different styles generally fit. Here are some tips that we frequently suggest to our customers:
  • Most people usually fit into the smaller of the 2 Birkenstock sizes noted in the chart above for most Birkenstock sandals, especially in the regular width. Usually you only move to the larger size in the regular width for Birkenstock shoes and sometimes clogs.
  • Most people generally fit well in the regular width as compared to the narrow. If a style only comes in the narrow width, you may need to go up to the next Birkenstock size. Narrows in Birkenstock are generally similar to an American medium, so don't be afraid to try a style in the narrow width even if you are typically a regular... just try the size up.
  • Make sure you position your heel all the way back in the heel cup before you adjust the straps. Many times, first-time wearers will position their toes at the front of the shoe first and not realize that there is way too much room in the heel. You will be able to visually see how your foot fits on the anatomical footbed and it will be obvious if it is not the right size.
Upon receiving your Birkenstock sandals, take note of the wear and care tips sheet we have included in the box. Also, if you have any questions before placing your order or after, please feel free to message us. We will be happy to talk over your style choices to help guide you to the right fit, as sometimes the styles do hold your foot a bit differently. If you are really unsure of your size, measure the length of your foot from the back of your heel to the tip of your toe. We'll convert the length for you to give you the best estimate. All-in-all, don't worry as it's easy to return or exchange any pair to us in the event that the style just doesn't work out for you.
